A Batty Evening!
4 Aug 2016
Last week's Bat Walk at Springfield Mill Nature Reserve was a great success. Thanks to Midlothian Council Rangers Jo Cooke and Alan Krumhold for sharing their expert knowledge of bats. All the participants thoroughly enjoyed the evening - despite the dreaded midges. After the very informative bat quizz, and lots of questions and answers, we explored the area with our bat detectors and it wasn't long before we spotted a number of pipistrelle bats flitting over the grasslands and around the edge of the trees. On the way back along the river we also spotted many daubentons bats swooping down over the North Esk River.
Jo Cooke shows us what's inside a bat box!
Alan sends us off around the nature reserve on the hunt for bats.
Here's what we're looking for - but hopefully alive this time!
This is one of the bat detectors we used.
